What is JSM ?A short history of "Journées de Spectroscopie Moléculaire" JSM is a bi-annual event. It started in 1994, expanding the working group for French-speaking electronic molecular spectroscopists (GESEM, created by Mme H. Lefèbvre-Brion et M. S. Leach at the Photophysique Moléculaire laboratory in Orsay) to other spectral regions. JSM gives an opportunity for the spectroscopy community in France to meet, discuss and share ideas, and allows the younger members of the community to get to know the seniors in a medium-sized scientific meeting. JSM expanded spectrally from the microwave to vacuum ultraviolet, and also welcomed input from the increasingly important quantum chemisty community. Its primary aim is still to help to make the connections that will push forward our knowledge and understanding of molecular physics through spectral signatures. In 2008, JSM amalgamated with PAMO, the Atomic, Molecular and Optics division of the French Physical Society, SFP. PAMO-JSM, with its parallel sessions, known as mini-colloquia, maintained the tradition of bringing this community together, and providing many young scientists with the opportunity to give their first oral presentation at a scientific meeting. When PAMO merged with the general meeting of the French Optical Society, the balance changed, and in 2017, the Scientific Committee of JSM opted to go back to a smaller-scale meeting, more focused and oriented towards our common themes of interest. Université Claude Bernard, Lyon 1, has hosted this new format in 2018. Université Paris-Créteil has the privilege to organise the 2nd edition of the new format. A big 'thank you' to all the colleagues, sponsors and participants who have made a success of JSM, and to the universities who have hosted JSM in the past.
